The Russian Federation is preparing to host a parallel football tournament for national teams that did not qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Russian Football Union is developing a competition that would feature between eight and twelve teams and be played in stadiums used during Russia’s 2018 World Cup. If it goes ahead, and I hope so, it would be the first time a nation banned from FIFA competitions attempts to stage a rival global tournament.
