No, there is no color revolution happening in Serbia

As of today, July 3, 2025, there are ongoing anti-government protests in all Serbia. These protests, which began in November 2024 following a deadly railway station canopy collapse, have intensified in recent days. Now we have in Serbia large rallies and street blockades, and violent clashes between peaceful demonstrators and police, especially in Belgrade and in Novi Sad, the second largest city in Serbia.

While these events involve elements that have been associated with “color revolutions” – namely, mass protests challenging an authoritarian-leaning government and demanding democratic reforms with foreign powers fueling the protest movement– there is debate about whether this specifically constitutes a “color revolution” in Serbia today.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has repeatedly alleged that the student and citizens protests in Serbia were part of a foreign plot to destabilize his government.

Vučić has repeatedly claimed that the ongoing protests in Serbia constitute an attempted “color revolution” orchestrated by foreign powers. President Vučić has accused “foreign agents” of orchestrating the protests, which is a common claim in the context of “color revolutions”. Vucic used much of his public addresses and TV appearances to slam Western interference, claiming the international community wants a ‘puppet regime’ with a “color revolution”.

Vučić has not provided any evidence to support these claims.

However, there is no evidence to support Vučić’s claim that the protests are a Western-backed attempt at a “color revolution”. There is no evidence of western involvement, or foreign orchestration, in the Serbian protests. While Serbia has experienced protests in the past, including those labeled as “color revolutions,” the current situation is different. And Aleksandar Vučić, the current President of Serbia, served as the Minister of Information in the Milošević government and knows exactly what the Western spies and paid agitators can do. But Aleksandar Vučić, after months of persistent anti-government protests in Serbia, primarily led by university students and citizens has not publicly presented evidence for these claims. Why?

If it’s true that the current protests may share some characteristics with past “color revolutions” (like the use of the internet for communication and the involvement of NGOs), the current protests in Serbia today are primarily focused on domestic issues like demanding reforms to ensure free and fair elections, address corruption – jobs based on political ties, and lucrative contracts based on political connections…

Students and Serbian protestors are peaceful. They only want to live and work freely. They want a country where they can live, work, study, and think differently. They want knowledge to be the condition for employment, not a party membership. Majority of them, I will say well over 95% are motivated and supported by what they see and experience at their homes everyday. Around them is nothing else but complete destruction of the civility and Serbian democracy, the rule by force and by fear through corruption.

These young (and old) people don’t see any future for them, for their kids, and for Serbia, because there is none under Vučić’s regime. They fear for the destiny, integrity and sovereignty of the mother land that is highly compromised by these people that are running the state presently.

So, it was important to clarify the situation regarding claims of a “color revolution” in Serbia. While significant anti-government protests are currently taking place in Serbia, it’s not accurate to definitively label them a “color revolution”.

No, there is no color revolution happening in Serbia, only people like you and me and our kids who want a free Serbia.
