In Belgrade on May 9, 1945, Victory Day was celebrated following Germany’s surrender to the Soviet Union, marking the official surrender of Nazi Germany, and the end of World War II in Europe.

This date was significant because it commemorated the defeat of fascism and the end of the war. The conflict in Yugoslavia had one of the highest death tolls by population in the World War II.

The celebration in Belgrade was a time to recognize the sacrifices made by the Red Army and other Allied forces, including the Yugoslav Partisans, the largest resistance movement in occupied Europe
